Position the Queen Cage for Maximum Contact

Place it between central brood frames

Secure the cage between two central brood frames, preferably within the active brood area. The cage should be firmly mounted with a frame hanger, strap, wire, or other suitable accessory so it cannot fall or become displaced as the bees work around it.

Expose the screened surface

The wire mesh should remain accessible between the frames. Workers need to touch the cage, feed the queen, and detect her pheromones through the screen.

Do not press the frames tightly against the cage or bury the mesh in comb. Restricted screen exposure reduces worker contact and can prevent proper feeding.

Position the queen cage approximately three-quarters of the way up the brood frame, with the escape or candy end angled slightly upward. This helps prevent a dead attendant bee from falling into and blocking the exit.

Because cage designs vary, follow the cage manufacturer’s specified orientation when it differs from this general practice. The essential requirements are that the exit remains unobstructed, the queen is safely contained, and the screened sides are exposed to workers.

Keep the cage stable

A loose cage can be damaged, covered with comb, or forced against a frame. Reliable cage-mounting accessories are particularly important when using foundation or when the bees are actively drawing new comb.

Use Delayed Release to Let Acceptance Develop

Keep the queen protected initially

Leave the protective cork or cap over the candy exit during the initial introduction period. A common evaluation point is around five days, although local conditions, colony temperament, and the queen cage design may justify a longer period.

The delay allows colony odors and queen pheromones to blend while preventing immediate direct contact.

Inspect behavior rather than relying only on time

Open the nucleus with minimal smoke and observe the workers on the cage:

  • Positive signs: bees move calmly across the mesh, touch the queen with their antennae, and offer food.
  • Warning signs: bees cling tightly to the screen, bite the mesh, or behave aggressively toward the queen.

If workers are biting or tightly balling around the cage, do not release the queen. Leave the candy cap in place and reassess after additional time.

Allow natural release through candy

Once acceptance behavior is evident, remove the protective cork from the candy exit if required by the cage design. The workers can then chew through the soft candy and release the queen gradually.

Avoid forcing the queen directly into the colony while the bees are still unsettled. Natural release provides an additional period of controlled contact.

Move the Accepted Queen Into Production

Confirm that the queen is functioning

After release, verify that the queen is moving normally and that workers are attending her. Once sufficient time has passed, look for eggs, young larvae, and an orderly brood pattern.

A nuc allows this assessment before the queen is committed to a full-size production hive.

Merge only after the nucleus is stable

When the queen is accepted and laying properly, the nuc can be merged into the larger colony. The receiving production colony must also be checked for queenlessness and queen cells before the merge.

If the production hive contains a queen, virgin, or developing replacement cell, it may reject the established nucleus queen.

Use a gradual integration plan

A controlled merge is safer than combining colonies without preparation. Maintain the accepted queen’s nucleus as a stable unit until the receiving colony has been properly prepared and conditions are suitable for integration.
