What are the components of a Flow Hive vs Langstroth beehive? Compare Features for Modern Beekeeping

At their core, the Flow Hive and the Langstroth hive share the same fundamental architecture. Both systems rely on a vertical, modular structure comprising a base, a brood box for the colony’s population, a honey super for storage, and a protective roof.

The Flow Hive is essentially a modified Langstroth hive. The critical distinction lies in the "honey super"—the upper box where honey is stored. While a standard Langstroth uses traditional removable frames, the Flow Hive utilizes specialized technology in this specific section to facilitate tap-based harvesting.

The Shared Anatomy

To understand the difference, you must first recognize the foundation that both hive styles share.

The Base and Entrance

Both hives begin with a base or bottom board. This component provides the structural foundation for the stack and creates the entrance for the bees to enter and exit the colony.

The Brood Box

Sitting directly on the base is the brood box. This is the "living quarters" for the colony. In both the Flow Hive and the standard Langstroth, this box contains standard frames where the queen lays eggs and the bees raise larvae.

The Inner Cover

Both systems typically utilize an inner cover. This sits on top of the highest box to create a ceiling for the bees, providing insulation and preventing them from gluing the roof down with propolis.

Where the Technology Diverges

The divergence between the two systems occurs entirely in the upper section of the hive, known as the honey super.

The Conventional Langstroth Super

In a standard Langstroth hive, the super contains wooden or plastic frames holding a wax or plastic foundation.

Bees build wax combs on these frames and fill them with honey. To harvest, the beekeeper must smoke the bees, dismantle the hive, lift out the heavy frames, and use a centrifuge to spin the honey out.

The Flow Super

The Flow Hive replaces the standard super with a Flow Super. This box contains specialized Flow Frames rather than traditional ones.

These patented frames feature a mechanical honeycomb matrix. The super also includes observation windows to allow you to check honey progress without opening the hive, and a harvesting shelf to hold jars during extraction.

Structural and Aesthetic Differences

While the internal dimensions are often compatible, the exterior components frequently differ in design philosophy.

The Roof Profile

A standard Langstroth hive usually features a flat, telescoping outer cover designed for utility and stacking.

In contrast, the Flow Hive is recognized by its gabled (sloping) roof. This is often shingled and designed to shed rain more effectively while providing a distinct aesthetic.

Ventilation and Pest Management

While standard hives can be upgraded, Flow Hives typically come out-of-the-box with a multifunctional tray in the base for pest inspection. They also frequently include integrated ventilation control systems to manage airflow within the hive.

Understanding the Trade-offs

Mechanical Complexity vs. Standard Simplicity

The Langstroth hive relies on static components. There are no moving parts to break or clean, which contributes to its durability and low cost. The Flow Hive introduces mechanized plastic parts (Flow Tubes and Keys) into the hive, which simplifies harvesting but adds mechanical complexity.

Modularity and Weight

Because the Flow Hive is built on the Langstroth standard, the parts are generally modular. You can place a Flow Super on top of a standard Langstroth brood box. However, Flow supers are often heavier than standard supers due to the mechanism, though you rarely need to lift them when full.

Making the Right Choice for Your Goal

The bees will live in the brood box comfortably regardless of which system you choose. The decision comes down to your harvesting preference.

  • If your primary focus is cost-effectiveness and standardization: Choose a standard Langstroth hive, as the components are universal, cheaper, and widely available.
  • If your primary focus is harvesting convenience: Choose a Flow Hive, as it eliminates the heavy lifting and processing equipment required for extraction.

The best hive is the one that allows you to manage your colony consistently and safely.

Summary Table:

Component Langstroth Hive Flow Hive
Base & Brood Box Standardized modular foundation Standardized modular foundation
Honey Super Traditional frames (requires centrifuge) Specialized Flow Frames (tap extraction)
Roof Design Flat telescoping outer cover Gabled (sloping) roof for rain runoff
Harvesting Method Manual extraction & heavy lifting Mechanical tap-based harvesting
Observation Requires opening the hive Integrated observation windows
Pest Management Optional upgrades Integrated multifunctional base tray
