How to Inspect Brood for AFB and EFB

Start with the brood pattern

Healthy brood is generally compact, with uniform larvae and regularly capped cells. A scattered or “shotgun” brood pattern is abnormal but not specific to either foulbrood.

AFB commonly produces irregular sealed brood with sunken, greasy, darkened, or perforated cappings. EFB more often presents as uncapped, twisted, discolored larvae distributed unevenly across the comb.

Use lighting and frame orientation

Hold the frame by the top bar and angle it so sunlight comes over your shoulder. This improves visibility of larvae lying against the lower cell wall and helps reveal discoloration, twisting, or decomposition.

AFB larvae may change from pearly white to yellow, brown, or nearly black as they decompose. The remains can become semi-fluid and adhere to the cell wall.

EFB larvae usually die before sealing or around the time of capping. They may appear pale yellow, tan, or brown, with a twisted C-shape or stretched appearance; tracheal tubes may be visible through the body.

Perform the roping test carefully

Insert a clean probe into the remains of a suspicious AFB cell and slowly withdraw it. AFB material typically forms a sticky, viscous thread that stretches before breaking.

EFB does not normally produce this characteristic roping. The larval remains are more likely to crumble, dry, or remain as a non-stringy mass at the bottom of the cell.

The test is useful, but it is not absolute. Decomposition stage, mixed infections, and operator technique can produce ambiguous results.

Treat odor as supporting evidence only

AFB may have a pungent, foul, or glue-like odor, while EFB can also produce a putrid smell. Odor varies with disease stage and environmental conditions, so it should never override the physical findings or laboratory results.

The Diagnostic Differences That Matter Most

AFB: sealed brood and persistent remains

The most useful AFB combination is:

  • Sealed brood with sunken or perforated cappings
  • Dark brown, greasy, or semi-fluid larval remains
  • Positive roping reaction
  • Spotty brood pattern
  • Foul decomposition odor

AFB can affect larvae and pupae, and worker bees may spread spores while cleaning infected cells. This makes a seemingly localized case a potential apiary-wide contamination event.

EFB: primarily unsealed brood and twisted larvae

The most useful EFB combination is:

  • Uncapped or recently capped larvae
  • Yellow, tan, brown, or gray discoloration
  • Twisted or stretched larval bodies
  • Melted remains at the cell bottom
  • No characteristic roping

EFB may resolve under favorable colony conditions, but that possibility does not justify assuming that every non-ropy case is harmless. A weak colony, heavy infection, or uncertain diagnosis still requires professional assessment.

Confirm suspected cases in the laboratory

Field inspection should be treated as screening and triage. PCR, immune-based assays, or other approved laboratory methods can help distinguish P. larvae from M. plutonius and identify cases that do not present clearly.

Samples should be collected using appropriate procedures and submitted according to local veterinary or apiary authority requirements. Suspected AFB should also be reported where regulations require notification.

What the Diagnosis Means for Hive Hardware

AFB requires a containment-first policy

AFB spores can remain viable in frames, woodenware, hive tools, and other contaminated materials for decades. Standard medication does not eliminate spores embedded in equipment.

Confirmed AFB therefore commonly requires destruction and burning of infected frames and other porous components, subject to local regulations. Wooden hive bodies may require burning, approved heat treatment, or another officially accepted decontamination method.

Do not move questionable equipment between colonies

Frames, boxes, inner covers, bottom boards, tools, and protective equipment from a suspected AFB hive should be isolated immediately. Moving them through an apiary can distribute spores even when the original colony appears to be the only affected unit.

Separate inspection tools and clearly marked quarantine equipment are practical controls for commercial and multi-yard operations. Cleaning tools between colonies is essential, but cleaning alone should not be treated as proof that porous AFB-contaminated woodware is safe to reuse.

EFB usually permits more recovery options

Because EFB does not form the same persistent spore stage as AFB, contaminated equipment can often be managed through targeted sanitation, comb replacement, and colony-level interventions.

Depending on severity and local guidance, options may include replacing suspect comb, installing fresh foundation, re-queening, breaking the brood cycle, or using a shook-swarm approach. Any antibiotic use must follow approved local veterinary and regulatory requirements.

Replace comb strategically

Comb replacement reduces the concentration of accumulated pathogens and other contaminants. For EFB, systematic replacement can support colony recovery; for AFB, it is part of a broader destruction and containment plan rather than a standalone remedy.

Distributors and apiary operators should therefore maintain access to frames, foundation, hive bodies, lids, bottom boards, and replacement hardware before an outbreak occurs. Delayed sourcing can encourage unsafe reuse of contaminated components.

Building a Practical Hardware-Control Workflow

Separate inspection from decontamination

Inspection tools should be designed for safe frame manipulation, probing, and sampling, but they should not be assumed to sterilize themselves during use. Establish a defined process for tool cleaning, disposable probe replacement, and movement between yards.

Hardware should be labeled by status, such as clean, suspect, quarantined, or approved for reuse. This prevents accidental mixing in warehouses, transport vehicles, and apiary storage areas.

Match the response to the confidence level

A suspected but unconfirmed case should trigger isolation and sampling rather than immediate redistribution of equipment. A confirmed AFB case requires the most restrictive response.

A probable EFB case may allow controlled salvage, but only after the colony and equipment have been evaluated. Mixed infections and misdiagnosis are reasons to seek laboratory confirmation before making expensive hardware decisions.

Plan replacement inventory in advance

AFB management can require rapid replacement of frames and woodenware, while EFB management may require fresh foundation and comb-replacement capacity. Both situations create urgent demand for compatible hive components.

For wholesalers and resellers, a full-spectrum inventory is operationally important: frames, foundation, hive bodies, covers, bottom boards, tools, protective equipment, and sanitation supplies may be needed together rather than as isolated products.

Understanding the Trade-offs

Field tests are fast but not definitive

A probe test provides an immediate indication and helps determine whether a colony should be isolated. However, a negative roping result does not prove that the colony is free of AFB, particularly when brood is decomposed or the sample is poorly selected.

Laboratory testing takes more time and may delay a final hardware decision, but it reduces the risk of destroying usable equipment or spreading disease through an incorrect diagnosis.

Destruction is costly but protects the apiary

Burning infected frames and woodenware creates direct replacement costs and may interrupt production. Nevertheless, retaining contaminated AFB equipment can create much larger downstream losses through reinfection and spread between colonies.

The correct comparison is not simply “destroy versus save.” It is controlled replacement now versus potentially repeated losses across the apiary.

Sanitation cannot compensate for poor segregation

Heat treatment, cleaning, and disinfecting are useful only when applied to materials and pathogens for which those methods are effective. They do not justify returning questionable AFB-contaminated porous equipment to service without official guidance.

Likewise, reusing EFB-associated equipment without cleaning or comb management can undermine an otherwise sound recovery plan.

Avoid diagnosis by a single symptom

Odor, brood pattern, larval color, and capping condition can overlap with other brood disorders. Chalkbrood, sacbrood, colony stress, nutritional problems, and secondary decomposition may complicate the visual picture.

Use the combination of findings, isolate when warranted, and confirm uncertain cases through an approved laboratory or apiary-health service.
