What is the recommended schedule for adding honey supers and queen excluders? Maximize Your Honey Yield This Season

Ideally, you should add honey supers and queen excluders to your beehive in May. This specific timing is dictated by two critical factors: the completion of spring mite treatments to prevent honey contamination and the onset of the nectar flow which drives rapid colony expansion.

The goal of this schedule is to synchronize hive expansion with the nectar flow while protecting the queen. Equipment must be installed only after medication is removed to ensure honey purity, and removed before winter to prevent the queen from freezing.

The Critical Pre-Requisites for Installation

Clearing Spring Treatments

Before you add any honey supers, you must ensure all spring Varroa mite treatments have been completed and removed from the hive.

If treatments are left in place while supers are on, chemicals can contaminate the honey intended for harvest.

Monitoring the Nectar Flow

The installation usually coincides with the spring nectar flow in May.

At this time, the colony population surges, and bees require additional space above the brood box to store the incoming nectar.

Installation Strategy and Mechanics

Proper Placement

The queen excluder is placed directly on top of the brood chamber (the bottom boxes).

Ensure the excluder sits flat and tightly; any gaps will allow the queen to squeeze through, defeating the device's purpose.

"Baiting" the Supers

Bees are sometimes reluctant to cross the queen excluder to work in the new supers.

To encourage movement, you can move a couple of frames containing honey, pollen, or sealed brood from the brood chamber into the super above the excluder.

This acts as "bait," drawing nurse bees upward through the excluder to care for the brood or manage the stores.

Replacing Brood Frames

If you move brood frames up, replace the empty slots in the bottom brood chamber with foundation or drawn comb.

Crucially, verify the queen is still in the bottom brood box before placing the excluder and closing the hive.

Ongoing Management: The 85% Rule

Adding Supers Incrementally

Do not add all your honey supers at once.

Add a single super first; only add a new one when the existing super is approximately 85% full of capped and uncapped honey.

Preventing Pest Infestation

Adding too much space too quickly makes the hive vulnerable to pests.

A colony cannot effectively guard a large, empty volume against small hive beetles and wax moths.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

The Winter Freeze Risk

You must remove the queen excluder after the nectar flow ends and honey is harvested, well before winter.

In winter, the bee cluster moves upward to access honey stores and stay warm.

If the excluder is left on, the workers will move up, but the queen will be trapped below it, separated from the cluster, where she will freeze and die.

Trapping Brood Above

If you accidentally place the excluder while the queen is in a super, or if you move brood frames up, you will have brood in your honey storage.

If brood exists in the supers, you must wait at least 24 days before extracting honey.

This duration ensures all worker (21-day cycle) and drone (24-day cycle) brood have hatched and cleared the frames.

Making the Right Choice for Your Goal

  • If your primary focus is Honey Purity: Ensure absolutely all mite treatments are removed before the first super is placed in May to avoid chemical contamination.
  • If your primary focus is Colony Growth: Use the "baiting" method by moving brood frames up to force bees to utilize the new space immediately.
  • If your primary focus is Queen Survival: Mark your calendar to remove the excluder immediately after the final harvest to prevent separating the queen from the winter cluster.

Successful beekeeping relies on timing your equipment changes to match the biology of the bee and the rhythm of the seasons.

Summary Table:

Key Phase Timing Primary Action Critical Requirement
Pre-Installation Early Spring Remove Mite Treatments 100% medication-free hive
Initial Addition May (Nectar Flow) Add 1st Super + Excluder Queen must be in bottom brood box
Expansion Active Season Add next super at 85% capacity Avoid excess space to prevent pests
Winter Prep Post-Harvest Remove Queen Excluder Prevent queen from freezing/isolation
